On levels one and two feature large windows running the length of the building. Directly facing Western Road, students working and socializing in this area will benefit from energy-saving ‘smart windows’ that tint automatically and offer an unobstructed view.
The Atrium will be a showcase space to host more events to better engage with youth, students, industry, alumni and friends. Pictured above is the large classroom that includes a skyfold door. When open to the Atrium, it will create a 4,500 ft2 exhibition space.
There are multiple areas in the building for different student needs, like this one that shows the lounge spaces for eating, socializing and group work.
Other Innovative Features
Welcoming Atrium - with an exposed stairway that spans three floors and can function as a stunning reception area.
Engineering Galleries - are light-filled spaces stretching the length of the building where students can gather and work together. These welcoming spaces will enable us to embrace our community by hosting more events, camps and workshops.
Collaborative Research Space - that will not be assigned to traditional "departments" but support interdisciplinary areas, such as Mechatronic Systems, Biomedical and Sustainable Engineering.
Teaching Laboratories - offer well laid out space that encourages collaboration for hands-on experimentation and problem-solving.
Tiered Classrooms - will be key spaces for delivering Western’s Integrated Engineering curriculum that incorporates case-method engineering innovation courses plus core courses from civil, chemical, electrical and mechanical engineering.
Large Fabrication Space - totaling 2,500 ft2 for prototyping and the Innovation and Engineering Design course projects.
Flexible Meeting Spaces - where students can work on in-class and extracurricular group projects and practice presentations, and graduate students, faculty and industry leaders can consult on research projects.
Expanded Outdoor Spaces - that include outdoor courtyards and gardens where students can showcase their projects (Concrete Canoe, Sunstang and Western Formula Racing to name a few). Alumni and members of the community will also enjoy this outdoor space.
