Nano-scale Zero Valent Iron Research

2. Project Objectives

The objectives of nano-scale zero valent iron (nZVI) research include;

  1. Develop and synthesize new types of nanometals and their delivery systems suitable for the degradation of a broad range of free phase chlorinated hydrocarbon liquids in the subsurface;
  2. Characterize and quantify the reactivity of the newly synthesized nanometals and their delivery systems for the removal or conversion, to benign daughter products, of chlorinated hydrocarbons in batch experiments;
  3. Assess the mobility of synthesized nanometals with their delivery systems in natural porous media systems under conditions representative of those found in the subsurface;
  4. Determine appropriate mathematical models to predict nanoparticle mobility;
  5. Assess the utility of these nanometals and their delivery systems for the removal or conversion, to benign daughter products, of chlorinated hydrocarbons in porous media systems;
  6. Determine appropriate techniques for on-site synthesis and injection of nZVI required for their application at the field scale;
  7. Assess the mobility of the nZVI in a field trial;
  8. Assess cVOC degradation due to nZVI followed by microbial activity;
  9. Upgrade and test a numerical simulator to predict the transport of nZVI at the field trial.
