SyNRGS 2013

On September 20 and 21st the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering hosted the second Symposium for New Research in Groundwater Science (SyNRGS) at Western University. The two day event tied in with the annual INTEGRATE meeting, a research collaboration between Western, Queens and University of Toronto professors and researchers. The symposium brought together over 90 participants from a range of backgrounds including academic, industrial, and government partners. Students presented their research and received constructive feedback and comments from all those in attendance. Organized by Drs. Gerhard and O'Carroll the symposium provided an opportunity for students, researchers, and industry leaders to share ideas and collaborate on projects relating to groundwater and remediation research.

Western hosted the Engineering Summer Academy again this year, which brings in high school students from in and around London to learn about the different disciplines of engineering. RESTORE group members helped teach the Environmental Engineering portion of the Academy with lectures on topics such as hydrology, hydraulics, green roof technologies and drinking water. Students enjoyed hands on activities and socialized with RESTORE graduate students to learn more about what engineering is like at university. The Academy was a great success this year, thank you to all who helped out!

Above is an infrared image of the students on the green roof. The students used the infrared camera to look at the effect green roofs have on roof temperatures. To learn more about Western's Engineering Summer Academy visit their website here
