Project Title:
Modelling of nZVI transport in the subsurface
Project Description:
Nano-scale Zero Valent Iron (nZVI) shows tremendous potential for
remediating contaminated groundwater. Once injected into the subsurface,
nZVI particles can transform harmful chemicals to nontoxic compounds.
However, nZVI particles can aggregate and attach to soil grains in the
subsurface leading to reduced mobility, thereby limiting their
remediation potential. This project aims to understand the factors that
limit nZVI mobility by using a 3D computation simulator, modified to
model nZVI transport and examining factors affecting nZVI mobility.
Understanding the way nZVI travels in the subsurface will allow for
optimization of this remediation technology.
Personal Background:
Magdalena joined the RESTORE group in January 2011 as a
Post-doctoral Research Fellow and is investigating subsurface transport
of nano-scale zero valent iron (nZVI) particles. She completed her
doctoral studies in Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University
of Toronto (2010) and holds a M.E.Sc. (2000) and a B.E.Sc. (1997) in
Civil Engineering from UWO. Prior to her doctoral studies, she worked as
a Remediation Engineer at GZA GeoEnvironmental Inc, in Boston MA. Her
area of expertise is in groundwater remediation, specializing in
numerical modeling of subsurface flow and contaminant transport and
thermal technologies.
