Project Title:
Development testing and characterization of carbon-nanotube-based systems for removal of contaminants in surface water.

Project Description:
The level and complexity of water contamination worldwide has reached unprecedented levels in such a way that the complexity of this problem seems intractable. Carbon nanotube, an emerging nanomaterial, is a part of a novel generation of materials that can provide new opportunities for environmentally friendly technologies and cost-effective solutions to some of the most challenging environmental cleanup problems faced today. My research emphasizes to initially explore the potentials of carbon-nanotube-based system for diversely trace amounts of chlorinated hydrocarbon compounds and further to evaluate and optimize its effectiveness applied to various contaminants.

Personal Background:
I originally started my undergraduate studies at Wuhan Institute of Technology in China since 2000 and achieved my graduation with a Bachelor of Engineering in Environmental Engineering. I’m extraordinarily enjoyable and passionate about my major where environmental issues is one of the most concerns both for scientists and public. Because of my passion, I worked at a governmental environmental protection agency in my hometown for about one and half years following my completion.

During that period of time, I was conscious that environmental engineering is a cross-disciplinary field. At that moment, I was sparked to advance my knowledge to a broadly integrated field and was ignited a strong desire to continue my post-graduate degree overseas. Subsequently, I moved to Canada and prolonged my studies in Environmental Engineering as a master of engineering student. This course-based program successfully translated and adjusted me to be thinking and concerning environmental challenges globally. I had an opportunity for my master project, fortunately, to construct a comprehensive overview of the recent progresses in laboratory studies of carbon nanotube for contaminants removal from water. This project paper finally drew me to a research level to pursue and exploit a large scope of nanomaterial application for environmental remediation.
