Project Title:
Are dynamic effects in capillary pressure important at the field scale?

Project Description:
Gaurav’s work focuses on improving upon the models currently used to describe multiphase flow. He is evaluating the potential of these models to simulate the spread of NAPLs in complex subsurface environments. The objectives of the model are to determine the flow paths of fluids in a multiphase system, predict the arrival time of contaminants at a particular location, and delineate the extent of contamination.

Gaurav is currently developing a numerical simulator to model NAPL flow at the field scale. Lab experiments are also being conducted by Gaurav and other group members which will be used to validate the numerical model. Once successful, the model can be used commercially to enhance the prediction of subsurface NAPL contamination at the field scale. The result is a much more cost effective and efficient means of exploration and remediation of contaminated sites.

Personal Background:
Gaurav joined the RESTORE group following his move to Canada in 2008. He hails from India where he completed both his Bachelor’s and Master’s studies. After completing his Master of Technology (M. Tech), Gaurav worked at various universities in India and Bhutan. The focus of his Master’s research was Artificial Groundwater Recharge using Rainwater, which raised one key question for Gaurav: What is the fate of clean rainwater once it has reached the subsurface? Because subsurface contamination is a very common problem in industrialized countries, clean rainwater used to recharge aquifers can become polluted and thus may not be available for its intended use. Following this realization, he decided to pursue research in the area of Groundwater Contamination and Remediation.

He then discovered the significant work that was being done by the RESTORE group at Western in his primary area interest. This discovery inspired him to make the decision to relocate to Canada.
