Development of Continuous Ex Situ STAR Reactor

STAR is currently being used to treat petroleum wastes from oil refining processes in batch quantities. This requires the oily waste to be mixed with a porous media, typically coarse sand, prior to treatment. The batch process involves mixing the sand and waste together, loading it into the reactor vessel, igniting it, allowing it to combust and then cool, and finally unloading it. The vision of a continuous reactor would eliminate all of these steps except for combustion once the process was initiated. The continuous reactor would be filled with sand once, depending on maintenance requirements, and waste oil would be injected directly into the sand pack just above the area of combustion. A continuous reactor would increase throughput of waste oils, decrease downtime, and lower both capital and operating costs.

Personal Background

I graduated from the University of Guelph in 2011 with a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering. Upon graduation I joined Geosyntec Consultants in Guelph, ON as a junior engineer helping to design groundwater treatment systems. After a year I became involved in the STAR group at Geosyntec and began working solely on the prototype ex situ reactor in London, ON. This work led me to pursue my Master’s degree with Dr. Gerhard.
