TUNNELS AND UNDERGROUND STRUCTURES IN ROCK

INSTRUCTORS:

K.Y. Lo, PhD, FEIC, P.Eng.
Professor Emeritus and Director, Geotechnical Research Centre

Dr. Lo has over 50 years of experience in dealing with various difficult problems in Geotechnical Engineering.  Since the mid-1970s he has been involved in many programs of stress measurements in rock.  He and his students developed the methodology of investigation, testing, analysis and design of tunnels in swelling rocks.  The methods have been widely used by the industries and have been applied to many projects.  He acted as specialist consultant in over 50 major tunnelling projects in Canada and abroad.

Clement Yuen, PhD, P.Eng.
Associate Member, Geotechnical Research Centre
Adjunct Professor, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Western University

Dr. Clement Yuen is a senior consultant of Golder Associates Ltd. Dr. Yuen was a Principal of Golder Associates working primarily on rock mechanics projects related to tunnels and underground structures in Canada and Asia. Dr. Yuen was also the General Manager of Transportation Infrastructure for Cheung Kong Infrastructure Ltd., Hong Kong, involving in infrastructure investments and operations in China.

Silvana Micic, PhD, P.Eng.
Associate Member, Geotechnical Research Centre
Adjunct Professor, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Western University

Dr. Silvana Micic is also currently a Senior Geotechnical Engineer at EXP Services Inc.(formerly Trow).  She has over 15 years experience in geotechnical engineering practice, research, design and management including landslide, ground improvement, foundation, tunnel and road projects. Dr. Micic is also an Adjunct Research Professor at Western University where she is involved in specialized testing and the evaluation of swelling and strength properties of different rock formations.

GUEST LECTURERS:

Trevor Carter, P.Eng., Ph.D.

Dr. Carter is currently a Principal with Golder Associates in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. He has worked on numerous underground and surface heavy civil projects worldwide, and has over 35 years of experience relating to underground tunnelling, mining design and construction.

Boro Lukajic, P.Eng., FEIC

Mr. Lukajic has over 35 years of experience in tunnelling including waterway, transportation and CSO tunnels. The majority of his tunnelling is within the drill and blast method. His project experience is worldwide, including Labrador, Yukon, Northern Ontario, USA, Latin America and Hong Kong. A variety of rock conditions and tunnel sizes have been added to Boro’s list of experience, requiring full face and sequential excavation methods. His experience in tunnelling under the Great Lakes is particularly interesting.

Mike McNally, P.Eng.
President and Chief Engineer of C&M McNally Engineering Inc. from 1979-2009

Since 1975, Mr. McNally undertook design and construction of many tunnelling and systems in Toronto and throughout Ontario, the Maritimes, and Eastern USA and consulted on projects worldwide.
