Synthesis and In-vitro Cell Compatibility

Assessment of Poly(amic acid)

Introduction

Compatibility of biomaterials is affected by polymeric structure and surface properties; surface topography and roughness, chemical structure and functional groups, conformational flexibility, type and density of surface charges etc.

Cell compatibility of custom designed and synthesized poly(amic acid) (PAA) evaluated using porcine radial artery cells (RACs).

Results

RACs seeded onto PAA coated surfaces at a cell density of 7000 cells/cm2.

RACs adhere, proliferated and preserved phenotypes.

          Cell density (72 h)

                - 9781 ± 796 cells/cm2 for the PAA coated

                - 7600 to 7800 cell/cm2 for the controls

RACs on uncoated cover slip
(Control)
PAA PAA coated cover slip

Potential Applications

Drug eluting stent coating (controlled release)

          Tissue engineering scaffold
