Most Significant Contributions to Research and/or to Practical Applications:

My research can be categorized in two broad areas: (i) Advanced treatment technologies for waste treatment, and (ii) environmental modelling. All my contributions shown below have a direct bearing on the reduction of environment pollution or understanding the fate processes of the pollutants in natural environment. I consider the following as some of my significant contributions in the last 6 years.

(1) Advanced Treatment Technologies

4 significant publications: (i) Inactivation of Gram-positive and Gram-negative Bacteria using TiO2 and Fluorescent Light , (ii) Photocatalytic Degradation of Orange II by TiO2 Catalysts Supported on Adsorbents , (iii) Photocatalytic Oxidation of Paracetamol: Dominant Reactants, Intermediates, and Reaction Mechanisms , and (iv) Impact of Ultrasonication of Hog Manure on Anaerobic Digestability . These1-3are pioneering research showing novel applications of TiO2, a very useful photocatalyst and advanced oxidation processes for environmental remediation. The first work1 demonstrates that significant removal of bioaerosol can be achieved using indoor lighting and a thin layer of TiO2; the results can be applied for designing sanitary surfaces for hospital, food processing industry or other clean room applications; At present, the process is used in a project funded by Ontario Centres for Excellence (OCE), Vive-Nano, and Nutech Group of Industries to develop a comprehensive indoor air cleaner to be used in HVAC systems. In the other work, we conduct a thorough analysis to improve the surface area and subsequent improvement in adsorption of organics by TiO2. These catalysts can be used successfully for the continuous removal of organic pollutants from both air and water at a significantly lower cost than the traditional photocatalysis and adsorption processes. The recent work3 demonstrates comprehensive methods to determine photochemical reaction pathways relating hydroxyl radical, electron/hole, and superoxide radicals involved in photocatalysis; the analysis is valuable for scaling up of the process, and shows our ability to detect, quantify and removal of micropollutants in water. Ultrasonication4, an advanced oxidation process by which hydroxyl radicals are produced was used to pretreat anaerobic sludge prior to digestion to improve biogas production, odor removal, and sludge dewatering. A series of comprehensive study in collaboration with Trojan Technologies, Inc. was conducted for primary, waste activated sludge, and hog manure with detail cost analysis, modelling of anaerobic digestion with improved kinetic constants indicating the optimum pretreatment processes.

(2) Environmental Modelling

3 significant publications: (i) Application of Computational Fluid Dynamics for Simulation of Drying Processes: a Review, (ii) Numerical Simulation of a Pneumatic Dryer Using Computational Fluid Dynamics, and (iii) Modeling the Effect of Sonication on Biosolids Anaerobic Digestion . In environmental modeling, I use both traditional approaches based on first principles, kinetics and equilibrium processes, as well as computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The review5 on numerical simulation methods for multi-phase drying is a pioneering work critically analyzing the existing multi-phase CFD modeling approaches. This work provides considerable insight to the modellers in the field; the follow up work6 demonstrates a few successful models that can be applied for gas-solid drying, specifically for the drying of municipal sludge. The last work7 demonstrates the use of modified kinetic constants due to ultrasonic pretreatment of anaerobic sludge in traditional anaerobic digestion model and its sensitivity to relevant pretreatment parameters. All these work 5-7 advanced the existing knowledge significantly and generated valuable information for practical application in industry.
