Associate Professor of Software Engineering

Research Interests

I am currently the Assistant Dean (IT and e-Education) in the Faculty of Engineering at Western University in London/Ontario, Canada. My research interests within the Software Engineering (SE) field are very broad. In that regard, I have been carrying out comprehensive research which has yielded significant enhancements in many sub-areas of software engineering, such as:

Profile

Dr. L. F. Capretz has over 30 years of experience in Software Engineering as  practitioner, manager, and educator. He has worked, taught and done research on the engineering of software in North (Canada) and South America (Brazil and Argentina), Europe (U.K. and Italy), the Middle East (UAE), and Asia (Japan) since 1981.  He was the Director of the Software Engineering Program at Western until 2011. He spent his sabbatical as visiting associate professor at the University of Sharjah in the UAE. Before joining Western in 2000, he served as Director of Informatics at two universities in the State of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Formerly, he had held a tenured faculty position at the University of Aizu in Japan.

Dr. L. F. Capretz has published over 150 academic papers in journals (over 60), conferences (60+), technical reports, book chapters, and professional meetings - venues sponsored by IEEE, ACM, Elsevier, Springer, and UNESCO. He co-authored two books: Software Product Lines Process Assessment Methodology - A Practitioner's Approach released by VDM-Verlag, and Object-Oriented Software: Design and Maintenance published by World Scientific, currently being used in software engineering courses at universities in several countries. He is a MBTI qualified practitioner, ACM distinguished member, IEEE senior member, and certified Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Canada.

Overall, Dr. L. F. Capretz values a healthy balance between work, family and personal interests. He is an antique map collector, plays in a  Masters Soccer League during the summer, and practices both cross-country and downhill skiing in the winter. He is fluent in English and Portuguese, has good command of Japanese, fair understanding of Spanish and Italian, and plans to take up Arabic soon.
