Canada Research Chair in Geoenvironmental Restoration Engineering

RESTORE (Research for Subsurface Transport and Remediation) Group

Dr. Jason Gerhard has over 15 years of experience investigating subsurface contamination scenarios and remediation techniques. His expertise includes developing leading numerical models for investigating the behaviour of dense, nonaqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs) and their remediation. During 2002-2007, an Assistant Professor at University of Edinburgh, he led a strong research group supported by greater than 1.3M USD in active, competitively awarded funding. Recently, he has been awarded a Canada Research Chair at University of Western Ontario as well as funding to develop state-of-the-art laboratory and modelling facilities. His research program has generated breakthroughs in multiphase flow theory, developed and validated models for DNAPL migration-dissolution-transport-reaction in both unconsolidated and fractured porous media. His team is developing a new, combustion-based NAPL remediation technique (patent pending).

Current research also includes numerical investigations of DNAPL source zone remediation via chemical oxidation, surfactant flooding, and bioremediation in fractured rock. In addition, he leads numerical modelling for the Research Technology Development Forum (RTDF) DNAPL source area bioremediation (SABRE) project based on a field site in the UK. Numerical modelling of radionuclide immobilization by dissimilatory metal reducing bacteria in fractured rock is also underway, as is developing the ability of ground penetrating radar to monitor NAPL remediation schemes. Expert consulting has involved applying his numerical simulators for the design and optimization of remediation systems at DNAPL field sites.

Dr. Gerhard is an Associate Editor for Water Resources Research and has delivered invited platform presentations at both international universities and leading conferences in UK and North America.
