Dr. Charles Xu, associate professor of Chemical Engineering and NSERC/FPInnovations Industrial Research Chair in Forest Biorefinery, joined University of Western Ontario in May 2011 after serving Lakehead University for 6 years since 2005 as a faculty member in Chemical Engineering and Director of Green Energy Laboratory. He is an emerging young researcher and is building an international stature in the field of biorefinery, particularly for the production of bio-energy, bio-fuels, bio-chemicals and biomaterials from forest biomass and forestry residues. His research was featured in many local/national media including The Chronicle Journal in Thunder Bay Ontario, Toronto Star, and CBC Radio, etc. He was awarded the Japan Institute of Energy Young Scientists Award in 1999, Lakehead University Contributions to Research Award in 2007, and was recently nominated for the prestigious 2011 Syncrude Canada Innovation Award (presented to a young Canadian chemical engineer under the age of 40 who has made a distinguished contribution to the field of chemical engineering while working in Canada). Dr. Xu has organized an international special session on co-firing of coal, peat and biomass for power generation at the IASTED’s International Conference on Environmental Management and Engineering in 2009. He has a Chinese patent awarded, 2 US/Canadian provisional patents in process, and 6 novel technologies being evaluated for invention disclosure. He has published 3 book chapters and more than 120 papers in journals and conferences, including 60 peer-reviewed journal papers. Dr. Xu is currently serving as an Editor of the “International Journal of Chemical Reactor Engineering (IJCRE)”.
