Africa becomes a classroom for five Western Engineering students during the summer of 2010


Jessica Barker

Jessica Barker, Third-year Civil Engineering and International Development with a concurrent degree in Spanish Language and Literature
Jessica will be spending the summer in Ghana as part of her placement with Western’s Civil Engineering International Development program. Jessica will be working with a solid waste management (SWM) company called Zoomlion, which is currently the largest SWM company in Ghana.

Lauren Hockin

Lauren Hockin, Fourth-year Concurrent Degree with Civil and Environmental Engineering and Environmental Science
Lauren will be in Southern Malawi this summer working as a Junior Fellow with Engineers Without Borders (EWB). Although all the details of her placement have yet to be ironed out, Hockin will likely be helping with water-point monitoring and water-point functionality.

Anne Lombardi

Anne Lombardi, Third-year Civil Engineering and International Development
Anne will be spending the summer in Northern Ghana working as a Junior Fellow with Engineers Without Borders (EWB). Anne will be working with EWB's "Agriculture as a Business" program, which helps farmers increase the income they earn from agriculture.

David Marmor

David Marmor, Third-year Civil Engineering and International Development
David will be spending the summer in Ghana as part of his placement with Western’s Civil Engineering International Development program. David will be working in the field of Municipal Solid Waste Management with a privet company called Zoomlion Ghana Limited.

Katayoon (Kate) Pejman

Katayoon (Kate) Pejman, Third-year Civil Engineering and International Development
Kate will be spending the summer in Ghana with Jessica and David as part of her placement with Western's Civil Engineering International Development program. Together, they will be working with a solid waste management (SWM) company on two different projects: (1) a plastic recycling inventory and (2) working at the Korle Bu teaching hospital to categorize the waste being produced.
