Engineering
honours its top members
The Faculty of Engineering
recognized some of its best Thursday, June 16 at the Annual
Engineering Faculty & Staff Awards Dinner at the West Haven Golf &
Country Club.
Presentations were made to: Dr.
Hugo de Lasa, Mr. Tim Hunt, Mrs. Kathy Lesko, Ms. Nina Lowes, and
Dr. Douglas Shinozaki to celebrate their twenty-five years’ service.
Other awards included: Mrs. Kathy
Lesko, recipient of the Engineering Award of Excellence for
Outstanding Achievement by at Staff Member; Dr. Jeffrey Wood,
recipient of the R. Mohan Mathur Award for Excellence in Teaching; and Dr.
Cedric Briens, recipient of Engineering Award for Excellence in
Research.
Briens is currently the most
successful professor at Western Engineering in terms of research
funding. He has developed exceptional relationships with industry
and over the past two years has secured $770,000 of total research
funds; of which 89% is from industry and the remainder from NSERC
(these numbers exclude a successful CFI award of $ 360,000).
Determining a candidate for the R.
Mohan Mathur Award for Excellence in Teaching was not a hard one this
year. "The message is very loud and clear: Dr. Wood is an
exceptionally talented teacher that truly makes a difference in the
eyes of both students and colleagues," says Dean Berruti. "It is
because of people like Jeff that our reputation has considerably
increased.”
Lesko also received a strong nomination for the Engineering Award of
Excellence for Outstanding Achievement by at Staff Member. One
student said, "....she does not know students by number, but by
name!"
