Western Engineering Steps-Up for United Way

By Nancy Quaegebeur United Way 2008

On November 6, 2008 at One London Place, Western Engineering experienced monumental success at the annual United Way Stair Climb. This years’ team consisted of 18 members including students, staff, faculty and friends who came together to raise money for Western’s United Way Campaign. Their challenge was to climb 472 stairs, or 25 flights, up the tallest building in the city. There were also Western Engineering cheerleaders on-hand to keep everyone’s spirits up and energy flowing.

Not only did Western Engineering’s team reach the top of the building, they also managed to raise approximately $3,070.00 with final tallies still rising, rewarding them with the honour of the number one fundraising team at Western and the fifth best fundraisers overall. After the event, the team’s organizer Brigitte Heddle expressed her amazement of these accomplishments. “I was very impressed with the fundraising efforts especially being up against bigger teams like TD bank. Being able to raise that amount of money was remarkable.”

Heddle has continued the fundraising efforts for the Engineering United Way campaign by organizing the first annual Trivia Event that took place on November 13, 2008. Eleven teams participated in this event including students, faculty and staff. ‘Team B,’ which included Dr. Jon Southen, Nikolai Matisson and Andrew Ross, won round one of three ; while ‘Dr Southen’s Team is Cheating,’ consisting of Shawn Gettler, Stephanie MacPhee and Ian Molnar, won rounds two and three, making ‘Dr Southen’s Team is Cheating’ the overall winner. Their names will be engraved on the new Western Engineering in Support of United Way trophy.

Western’s goal for the United Way Campaign this year is $550,000. The official end of the Engineering United Way Campaign is November 28 but donations for the United Way are welcome at anytime.
