Frederick Keenan named recipient of the Engineering Award of Recognition

Fred Keenan
Frederick Keenan, Adjunct Research Professor in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at Western,  visited The Gambia prior to helping Professor Tim Newson arrange summer placements in that country for the students in the International Development program.

Each year the Faculty presents a special Engineering Award of Recognition to an individual (or team) who has made exceptional contributions to help further the academic, research and innovation, public service and/or administrative missions of the Faculty. These awards can be given to a faculty or staff member or an individual who is not an employee of Western Engineering. This year’s recipient of the award is Frederick Keenan, Adjunct Research Professor in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering. Keenan received strong letters of support from faculty, staff and students in Western Engineering.

In the last two years, Keenan has assisted the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering to develop the Civil Engineering and International Development program by introducing and teaching two new courses. In addition, his efforts in applying for funding from the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada allowed two students in the International Development program to travel to Ghana for an internship in 2008. Recently, he has also been a key player in creating new internship opportunities for our students in Gambia for the summer of 2009.

Many faculty members and students have commented on how Keenan has gone beyond the call-of-duty over the past several years to enhance the academic mission of the Faculty of Engineering. One commented that Keenan “is an excellent ambassador for our ambitions to ‘internationalize’ Western” and another stated that “He brings with him a wealth of life experience gained in the field from years of international travel, engineering projects within Canada and all areas of the globe and non-engineering projects though his work with CIDA, the AUCC and UNICEF.” One student who participated in the International Internship program last summer in Ghana wrote that “He has not only introduced me to a world issues and solutions to some of these problems, he has been an influential person that I have had the opportunity to work with at Western…His support for and influence on Western’s International Development program and myself is immeasurable.“

Keenan will be presented with a plaque and framed certificate at the 2009 Faculty and Staff Award Luncheon to be held on May 6 from 12:00pm-2:00pm at the Great Hall.
