Jin Jiang to receive the Engineering Prize for Achievement in Research

Jin JiangThe Engineering Prize for Achievement in Research is presented annually to recognize the outstanding research contributions of a faculty member in Western Engineering. By a unanimous vote, the selection committee has chosen Jin Jiang, Professor in the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering, as this year’s recipient. Jiang is a prolific researcher whose contributions in instrumentation and control systems have made a significant impact throughout Canada and the World.

In 1998, Jiang received the Engineering Teaching Award, making him the first ever, and only, faculty member to win both prestigious awards.

Jiang has been an active researcher for the past two decades and currently holds the prestigious position of NSERC/UNENE Senior Industrial Research Chair (IRC) in the Faculty of Engineering. His research activities are broad and include: fault-tolerant control systems; instrumentation and controls for nuclear power plants; distributed power generation and micro-grids.

Since he joined Western in 1991, Jiang has been very successful in attracting millions of dollars in government and industrial funding to support his research activities. Six of his former researchers are now university professors with academic appointments in Canada, United States, and throughout the globe. As the NSERC/UNENE Chair, he is currently supervising/co-supervising 21 researchers (graduate students, PDF, and research engineers). Jiang has also established a number of highly productive international collaborations with researchers in China, Japan, Korea, France, United Kingdom, and Germany. Recently he has co-authored a textbook on Control of Nuclear Power Plants (in Chinese) with his collaborator from China.

Jiang has also received numerous international honours to recognize his research contributions. He is an IET (Formally IEE) Fellow, senior member of IEEE and ISA. He has been internationally recognized as a leading expert in the instrumentation and control of nuclear power facilities and has been invited by IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) to develop technical documents for nuclear industries world-wide. Jiang has been invited to serve as an expert on Canadian Delegation to IEC (International Electro-technical Commission) sub-committee on Instrumentation and Control for Nuclear Power Plants to develop new standards. Furthermore, he is the North American Chair for the up-coming international conference on Nuclear Power Plant Instrumentation, Controls and Human Machine Interface Technology this year.

The scientific qualifications of Jiang and his life-time contributions to Instrumentation and Controls are at the highest international standards. He is a well-known expert and very deserving recipient of the Engineering Prize for Achievement in Research.

Jiang will be presented with a plaque and framed certificate at the 2009 Faculty and Staff Award Luncheon to be held on May 6 from 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm at the Great Hall.
