Daniel Hammond, a first-year Engineering student with a passion for the environment, organized Western Engineering’s first Environmental Fair - Exploring Sustainable Innovations & Solutions - held Friday, March 13 and Saturday, March 14, 2009. The overall goal of the event was to raise awareness about environmental issues and sustainability, while demonstrating how careers in engineering focus on solving these issues.

Student groups, grassroots organizations, Western research projects and representatives from industry were all in the same room to promote environmental awareness. Maryanne MacDonald the spokesperson for Waste Free World participated at the event and was very supportive, stating she believes that “it is through education that we will be able to maintain clean air, clean water and clean soil for the future generations.”

Amarjeet Bassi, Western Engineering’s Associate Dean, Academic also commented on the Fair by saying that “this year’s Fair reflects the importance and urgency related to issues such as global warming and pollution being felt by our younger generations.”
