Western Engineering students win Senior Design Competition

Fourth-year Electrical and Computer Engineering students Malgorzata Markowski and Ghazaleh Namavarian, and Mechanical and Material Engineering students Aida Kashigar, David Levin, and Dale Podolsky placed first in a senior design competition in June.

The multi-disciplinary team developed a prototype of a wirelessly controlled pressure valve intended as an implantable bladder prosthetic for incontinent patients. The Senior Design Competition in Accessible Medical Devices, which is sponsored by the Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center based at Marquette University and the University of Connecticut, had a rigorous set of standards for competitors.

Entries needed to be developed at a cost of less than $2000.00, and teams were expected to create a comprehensive website which includes reports, photographs and videos to go along with their device. (Visit the website of the Western Engineering team.)

The Western Engineering team competed against 19 other entries primarily from the United States, coming out ahead of such other schools as Columbia, Georgia Tech, Vanderbilt, and the University of Wisconsin. Malgorzata and Ghazaleh were supervised by James Lacefield, and Aida, David and Dale were supervised by Jim Johnson.

Congratulations to Dale, David, Aida, Ghazaleh, and Malgorzata!
