Grad students win prize in OCE video competition

Three Western Engineering graduate students were selected as second place winners at this year’s Ontario Centres of Excellence (OCE) Discovery video contest, May 12 – 13 in Toronto.

Congratulations go out to Matt Krantz, Vicky Huang and Henry Meng, who are supervised by Professor Jesse Zhu and Dr. Hui Zhang. Their project title was “Ultrafine Powder Coating: Innovation for the Coating Industry”. This is the first time that students from Western Engineering have been awarded a prize at OCE Discovery.

Matt, Vicky and Henry went to OCE Discovery as part of a large group of researchers from the Particle Technology Research Centre. Two other Western Engineering teams from the PTRC also entered the competition.

The video competition was new this year, with OCE looking for innovative and exciting ways for researchers to showcase their work. Students were invited to produce short, five minute videos of their OCE-sponsored research, using whatever props and extras they could come up with. Submissions were judged not only on the quality of the research, but also on how effectively and creatively the information was presented using the video format.

Winning submissions were broadcast on OCE’s Facebook page, and on their Discovery website, as well as at the Discovery 08 conference that took place May 12 and 13, 2008.

Congratulations to Matt, Vicky and Henry on their great work!
