The Geotechnical Research Centre (GRC), housed under the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering, held its annual awards ceremony this June.

Faculty, graduate students and staff gathered together on Thursday, June 26 in Spencer Engineering Building, room 2009 B to congratulate the winners, and hear a little bit about the kind of research they are engaged in.

The event was presided over by GRC Managing Director Dr. K.Y. Low, with additional remarks provided by Acting Dean George Knopf. Dr. Low provided the audience with some background information on each award, and then the recipient gave a short two-three minute talk on the details of their work, and gave thanks to their faculty supervisors for their guidance and assistance. Also on hand were Mrs. Marian Quigley and Mrs. Carolyn Brown, to help hand out the R.M. Quigley and L.G. Soderman Awards respectively.

Congratulations goes out to all the award recipients!

Milos Novak Memorial Award
Recipients: Mohamed Elkasabgy

This Award was setup in memory of Professor Milos Novak. The award is normally awarded annually to an engineer to pursue graduate studies in Geotechnical Engineering at The University of Western Ontario. Special consideration will be given to students working in the area of dynamics and soil-structure interaction who have demonstrated a sound academic background and a potential for contribution to the engineering profession in general.

R.M. Quigley Award
Recipients: Ian Molnar, Stephanie MacPhee, Qing Song and Xinwei Chen

The R.M. Quigley Award is named after Dr. R.M. Quigley, the founding director of the Geotechnical Research Centre and a distinguished Canadian Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineer. The award is typically awarded annually to an engineer or scientist to pursue graduate studies in Geotechnical Engineering at The University of Western Ontario. Special consideration will be taken of a candidate's academic, professional and general contributions to the engineering profession.

L.G. Soderman Award
Recipients: : Richard Oskirko and Daniela Ramirez

The L.G. Soderman Award, established in memory of the late Professor L.G. Soderman, distinguished Canadian Geotechnical Engineer, is awarded annually to an engineer to pursue graduate studies in Civil Engineering at The University of Western Ontario. The candidate's academic and professional qualifications, and general contribution to the engineering profession, are also taken into consideration.

John Booker Award
Recipients: Mahmoud El-Sharnouby and Christopher Kocur

The John Booker Award was setup to commemorate a distinguished scientist and engineer, teacher, researcher and mentor who, while a professor at the University of Sydney, had close research collaboration with the Geotechnical Research Centre, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, The University of Western Ontario. In addition to being an outstanding researcher, John Booker was known for fostering new talent as well as developing collaborative relationships in many different areas of research. The award is normally presented annually to an engineer or scientist to pursue graduate studies in Geotechnical or Geoenvironmental Engineering at The University of Western Ontario.
