National Engineering Week
Week of February 26 - March 6

Founded in 1992, National Engineering Week (NEW) is a cross-country festival of volunteer-organized events that takes place the first week of March each year.

The purpose is to raise public awareness of the importance of engineering and technology in our daily lives and to encourage young people to consider careers in engineering and technology.

Engineers Without Borders (EWB)

London Regional Children’s Museum

EWB Western will present demonstrations of water filtration and how it is used in developing countries at the London Regional Children’s Museum.  For more information, contact EWB Western at uwo@ewb.ca.

City of London Design Competition
Tuesday, March 1
7:00 pm – 10:00 pm
Conron Hall – University College
 

Six teams of Civil & Environmental Engineering students will present their designs for bridge and culvert structures to replace the existing culvert that carries Wonderland Road over Snake Creek, near the London Museum of Archaeology. The designs must accommodate increasing Wonderland Road from two to four lanes while maintaining traffic except for one 48-hour closure.   For more information, contact Karen Foullong at kfoullong@eng.uwo.ca.

National Centre of Audiology Tour/Wine and Cheese Reception
Hosted by London Chapter of Professional Engineers Ontario
Wednesday, March 2
5:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Centre of Audiology, Elborn College

The three-year-old National Centre of Audiology (NCA) features state-of-the-art equipment and a team of very dedicated research students studying how the human ear works. The tour will give participants a first-hand look at the facility and the work being done there. This event is for PEO members only. Reservations required; space is limited. The wine and cheese reception is a networking event for professional engineers taking place at the NCA facility.

Boundary Layer Wind Tunnel Laboratory Tour
Hosted by London Chapter of Professional Engineers Ontario

Wednesday, March 2
5:00 pm – 9:00 pm

The tour will give participants the opportunity to see many well-known projects and buildings. This event is for PEO members only. Children are welcome but have to be supervised at the Wind Tunnel. Engineers Without Borders (EWB) Day
Thursday, March 3

EWB Western will be holding an event to promote the International 'Make Poverty History' campaign. From 11 am to 2 pm, EWB will host a one-of-a-kind stunt outside SEB 1059. Anyone interested will have the opportunity to take out their frustrations towards world poverty and social injustice with the help of an EWB member, a Sumo Suit and a Pool Noodle.

Western Engineering Bonanza

NRC-IMTI Tour
Hosted by London Chapter of Professional Engineers Ontario

Manufacturing Technology Institute, 800 Collip Circle 

Many fascinating projects are undertaken at this facility.  For example, a machine that can create a physical part from a computer drawing with no machining required. The Director General of IMTI, Georges Salloum, will provide a brief presentation about IMTI’s R & D activities. Public welcome. Guiding Exploring Technology - Scouting Exploring Technology (GETSET)

London Scout Headquarters, 531 Windermere Rd.

The London Chapter of the Ontario Association of Certified Technicians and Technologists (OACETT) will host a variety of activities for Guides and Scouts to explore technology with interactive displays, technical demonstrations, indoor and outdoor challenges and off-site tours. One of the off-site tours will include The University of Western Ontario, including the solar car team.

K’NEX Construction Workshop
London Regional Children’s Museum

March 4 – extended hours – 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm

Volunteer workshop facilitators will work with Junior Innovators (ages 6+) to create structures using colour-coded building toys and guide the Junior Innovators through a special K’NEX bridge-building challenge.

Almost everyone has made a paper airplane at some time, but have you ever wondered what kind of science is behind the power of flight? This is the perfect opportunity for you to learn more about flight and to compete with your pet design. Will your design have the endurance for a lengthy flight? Will your design have the ability to land accurately? Come on out, bring your kids, have fun and find out. No need for reservations. All supplies will be provided.
