THE COUNTDOWN IS ON ...

There is a different feeling around campus these days.  Faculty and staff are starting to return from their summer vacations, Springett Parking Lot is starting to get busier and current students are starting to appear in the hallways once again.  This can only mean one thing - another academic year is about to begin.

In just a few short weeks, the 2005/2006 academic year will officially begin. The Faculty anticipates over 300 first-year students will attend Western Engineering this fall, bringing our total number of undergraduate students to over 1300.

EWB is helping to beat poverty

Making poverty history is a challenge Jason Teixeira is fully immersed in.

The Masters student in the Department of Mechanical Engineering has spent the last three months in Ghana working on a water and sanitation project. Representing Western's Engineers Without Boarders (EWB), Teixeira has also learned some of the local language and culture as well as experienced rural Ghanaian life.

Alumni, industry and friends support Western Engineering students

Students' odds of receiving an award or scholarship from the Faculty of Engineering has increased this year, thanks to two new donations.  The Professor Mel Poucher Award in Civil Engineering and The Vander Laan Undergraduate Scholarship in Engineering have just been added to Western Engineering's awards and scholarships list.

Helmut Kramer Award

Being invited to present a paper at a conference is an honour.  Winning an award for your paper at the end of the conference is icing on the cake.

Dr. I. I. Inculet, Dr. G. S. P. Castle, and Dr. K. Adamiak of the Applied Electrostatic Research Centre (AERC) attended the European Federation of Chemical Engineering 10th International Conference on Electrostatics in Finland from June 14-17, 2005.  Inculet's paper, Measuring Techniques in Industrial Applications of Electrostatic Forces, received the Helmut Kramer Award of the European Federation of Chemical Engineering.

Western is committed to raising $1.05 million in support of its Powder Technology Research Centre (PTRC). The Centre consolidates and builds upon Western’s research strength in chemical engineering, specifically powder technology, nanoparticles and fluidization.

Don Hewson, a managing director with more than 26 years of experience in industrial based research and development, will be leading the industrial liaison initiatives of the Sarnia-Lambtom campus of the Western Research Park.

PHYSMOD 2005 – International Workshop on Physical Modelling of Flow and Dispersion Phenomena
August 24 - 26
Spencer Engineering Building

This series of workshops, sponsored by Lakes Environmental and Western Engineering, focuses on the physical modelling of flow and dispersion and so presents an ideal forum for experimentalists to discuss their latest results, new measurement techniques and methods of analysis.  The workshop is held in memory of the late Robert Macdonald, University of Waterloo.

Deadlines

 
The Professor Mel Poucher Award in Civil Engineering

Deadline: Friday, September 30
This award will be presented to a full-time student in Year 2 or higher of the Civil & Environmental Engineering program, who has achieved a minimum average of 75% and is involved in extracurricular activities. Applications are available from the Faculty of Engineering and must be submitted, along with a description of the candidate’s extracurricular activities, by September 30, 2005. The recipient will be determined by the Faculty of Engineering.


The Vander Laan Undergraduate Scholarship in Engineering

Deadline: Friday, September 30
This award will be presented to a full-time student in Year 2 or higher of any program in Engineering who has achieved a minimum 80% average and who demonstrates an academic interest in environmental topics or water issues. Applications can be obtained from the Faculty of Engineering and must be submitted, along with a short essay, by September 30, 2005. The recipient will be selected by the Scholarship and Awards Committee in the Faculty of Engineering.
