Admission Criteria for each Degree

Consideration to the Accelerated MESc

  • The Accelerated MESc is designed to encourage the very top students in MME, to complete the MESc in a format that will only require one extra year of study beyond obtaining the BESc.
  • This program is offered to current 3rd year Western Engineering students, and in order to be accepted into the Accelerated MESc, an applicant must have an admission average of 80% or above in each of his/her 2nd and 3rd years.
For dual-degree students, the admission average is calculated based on 2nd and 3rd years of the Engineering program.
  • To take advantage of this program, an applicant must identify a supervisor during 3rd year, and begin his/her research project in the supervisor's lab between 3rd and 4th years. During the 4th year of study, the student is allowed to overload his/her schedule, taking 2 extra courses. In the summer following 4th year, the student starts the MESc and the research resumes. Two additional graduate courses must be taken and the research thesis is completed ideally within the next 12 months. To increase the appeal of this program, the following is suggested as a possible pathway: (1) Begin a research project in the summer between 3rd and 4th year; (2) Enrol in MME 4410 in 4th year; (3) Enrol in 2 technical electives in 4th year instead of 5 (one technical elective is replaced by MME 4410); (4) Enrol in 2 courses at the graduate level (96XX) in 4th year (one graduate course will be counted as one technical elective and the other graduate course will be counted towards the MESc); (5) Complete the research program and 2 additional graduate courses following the completion of 4th year.
