| The Faculty of Engineering
offers an Industry Internship Program (IIP) for those students interested in
gaining practical engineering experience in industry. In this program,
students spend 12 to 16 months working in industry between their third and
fourth years of their Bachelor of Engineering Science (B.E.Sc.) program.
Time spent in IIP may count as one-year pre-graduation experience toward the
four years experience required for licensing as a Professional Engineer in
the Province of Ontario. |
|
Any
engineering student who is completing third year, has at least a 65%
average, is permitted to work in the country in which the job is located and
who is recommended by a faculty member, may enroll in the program. |

Companies recruit students in the
Industry Internship Program. The company posts jobs through Student Career
Services during the November to March period. These jobs are reserved only
for students enrolled in the IIP. Each company selects and interviews its
candidates on campus and then makes job offers to the students through
Student Career Services during the mid February to early April period. In
addition to industry job postings, students may find their own employment. These positions must involve engineering work supervised by a professional
engineer. |

With
few exceptions, the students and employers are very satisfied with the
Industry Internship Program at Western. |
|
|
|
| Many employers find that this program
is even better than a traditional co-op program as it gives them a longer
time to assess the students and the students are able to work on advanced
engineering projects and see them through from beginning to end. The
students feel that they are better motivated and have a well-crystallized
plan for their careers after gaining valuable work experience and contacts
in industry. The Faculty of Engineering at Western feels this is a
real Win/Win situation. |
