Chemical & Biochemical Engineering Students

The Department of Chemical & Biochemical Engineering nominates students for these awards based on the OGS applicant pool from the previous Fall.
Civil & Environmental Engineering Students

- Graduate Scholarship in Structural Engineering – CEE nominates students for this award based on the OGS applicant pool from the previous Fall.
Geotechnical Engineering Students
- William E. and Ruth Lardner Graduate Award – CEE students will be e-mailed with detailed information, copy of application and deadlines in early June.

- Milos Novak Memorial Award – CEE students will be nominated by faculty members.

Internal – All Western Engineering Students
Julie Lassonde Scholarship
Awarded to a full-time graduate student in any program of Engineering based on academic achievement (minimum 78% average), research related to the faculty's strategic research plan and demonstrated financial need. The candidate will be doing research in one of the following areas: Emerging Green Technologies and Processes, Energy Systems or Infrastructure Renewal and can demonstrate how their research will benefit Ontario, Canada and the world. Candidates must provide a 500 word essay about their research along with a completed application form, financial need statement, resume and an unofficial copy of their academic record to the Research and Graduate Office, SEB 2079 in November 2011. A committee in the Faculty of Engineering with at least one representative who is a current member of the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (SGPS), will select the recipient. Value: 1 at $10,000.
Ross and Jean Clark Scholarship
Awarded to graduate students specializing in Environmental Engineering who have achieved a minimum 80% academic average and demonstrates financial need. Successful candidates must meet OSOTF eligibility requirements. The recipients will be selected by the Graduate Committee of the Faculty of Engineering on the recommendation of the Associate Dean, Research and Graduate Studies. This Scholarship was made possible by the generosity of Ross and Jean Clark to assist graduate students specializing in Environmental Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering at Western. Value: 2 at $1,000.
Internal - Chemical & Biochemical Engineering
E.G.D. Murray Scholarship in Biochemical Engineering
Awarded to a graduate student engaged in research in Biochemical Engineering. Established in honor of Dr. E.G.D. Murray, a distinguished Canadian microbiologist who was a visiting professor of Medical Research from 1955 to 1964. Value: 1 at $2,000.
Ivan Malek Scholarship in Biochemical Engineering
Awarded to a graduate student engaged in research in Biochemical Engineering. Established in honor of Dr. Ivan Malek, distinguished applied microbiologist. Academician of the Czechoslovakia Academy of Sciences and winner of the Lenin Peace Prize. Value: 1 at $2,000.
Internal - Civil & Environmental Engineering
Alan G. Davenport Award
Awarded to a full-time International graduate student from a developing country who is conducting research in the Civil & Environmental Engineering Alan G. Davenport Wind Tunnel Program based on academic achievement (minimum 80% academic average). The recipient will be selected by the internal Board of Directors in the Alan G. Davenport Research Group, Boundary Layer Wind Tunnel Laboratory, Faculty of Engineering, with at least one representative who is a member of the Faculty of Graduate Studies. This award was established by the internal Board of Directors from the Alan G. Davenport Research Group, Boundary Layer Wind Tunnel Laboratory, Faculty of Engineering, along with a gift from Ruth and Jeff Walker through The University of Western Ontario in honour of the late Dr. Alan G. Davenport, Engineering. Value: 1 at $1,600.
Graduate Scholarship in Structural Engineering
Awarded to a full-time graduate student in Engineering who is specializing in Structural Engineering based on academic achievement (minimum 80% average). The Graduate Committee in Civil & Environmental Engineering will select the recipient. At least one member of the committee will also be a member of the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. Value: 1 at $650.
Internal - Geotechnical Engineering
William E. and Ruth Lardner Graduate Award
Awarded annually to a full-time graduate student in the Civil & Environmental Engineering program who is doing research in geotechnical engineering, preferably in the area of geotechnical/structural interface and has at least one year of consulting or industry experience. Preference will be given to a Canadian or to a Canadian landed immigrant/domestic student. As part of the application students must submit a one page essay describing their work history, reason for pursuing graduate studies and an outline as to how this award will assist them financially to the Research and Graduate Office, SEB 2079 in June 2011. Value: 1 at $10,000.
John Booker Award
Awarded to a full-time graduate student pursing graduate studies in Geotechnical or Geoenvironmental Engineering based on academic achievement of a minimum of 78% and professional contributions to the engineering profession such as conference presentations, delegate to an engineering association, etc. Preference will be given to students who are conducting research in computational geomechanics. Preference will also be given to candidates who are Canadian citizens or landed immigrants, but with consideration to visa students in their third or fourth year of graduate studies at Western. The recipient will be chosen by the executive members of the Geotechnical Research Centre and approved by the Graduate Affairs Committee of the Faculty of Engineering. All students who meet the criteria will be considered for the award. This award was established by the Geotechnical Research Centre to recognize the academic achievement and professional contribution of students enrolled in graduate studies in Geotechnical or Geoenvironmental Engineering. Value: 1 at $700.
Milos Novak Memorial Award
The Award will normally be awarded annually to an engineer to pursue graduate studies in Geotechnical Engineering at the University of Western Ontario. The recipient will be chosen by the executive members of the Geotechnical Research Centre and approved by the Graduate Affairs Committee of the Faculty of Engineering. Special consideration will be given to students working in the area of dynamics and soil-structure interaction who have demonstrated a sound academic background and a potential for contribution to the engineering profession in general. Preference will be given to candidates who are Canadian citizens or landed immigrants but consideration will be given to visa students well advanced in their studies at Western. This award will normally be held for one year, but may, under special circumstances, be extended for a second year. The Award was set up in memory of Professor Milos Novak using surplus funds in his computer program account with the Geotechnical Research Centre. Additional funding has come from voluntary public contributions. Professor's Novak's family, Mrs. Kitty Novak and Dr. Milos Novak, Jr. were very supportive in initiating this award. Value: 2 at $1,100 each.
L.G. Soderman Award in Civil Engineering
The L.G. Soderman Award, established in memory of the late Professor L.G. Soderman, distinguished Canadian geotechnical engineer, is awarded to an engineer to assist him or her in pursuing graduate studies in civil engineering at The University of Western Ontario. Preference is given to those entering a geotechnical engineering program. Value: 2 at $1,300 each.
R.M. Quigley Award
This award was set up from retained contract earnings of the
Geotechnical Research Centre and is named after Dr. R.M. Quigley the
founding director of the Geotechnical Research Centre and a
distinguished Canadian Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineer.
It will normally be awarded annually to an engineer or scientist to
pursue graduate studies in Geotechnical Engineering at the
University of Western Ontario. Value: 2 at $900 each.
