EK3 Innovation Lab - Grand Opening

June 2006: Western officially opened the EK3 Innovation Lab which will be used by 15 graduate and undergraduate engineering students every year, supervised by Prof. Hamada Ghenniwa.

Award Winning Report

June 2006: Dr. Tarlochan S. Sidhu's Technical Report Protection Issues during System Restoration won the IEEE Power System Relaying Committee Award and the IEEE PES Working Group Award.

Distinguished University Professor Award

June 2006: Electrical and Computer Engineering professor Dr. Rajni Patel was honoured as a winner of a Distinguished University Professor Award.

London Hydro / Western Engineering Collaboration

May 2006: London Hydro is collaborating with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Western Ontario to the tune of $125,000.

Charlie Thompson Scientific Achievement Award

April 2006: Dr. Sumit Agrawal, Chief Surgical Resident in the Department of Otolaryngology at Western, was awarded the 2006 Charlie Thompson Scientific Achievement Award for his research paper entitled "3-D Endoscopy of the External Auditory Canal: A Step Towards Virtual Reality".
The research was conducted under the supervision of Prof. Hanif Ladak, who is jointly appointed to the Departments of Electrical & Computer Engineering and Medical Biophysics and has recently been cross-appointed to the Department of Otolaryngology. Dr. Lorne Parnes of the Department of Otolaryngology served as Agrawal's clinical advisor. Agrawal had also received the same award in 2005 for his work on computer modeling of the eardrum. The eardrum and canal models will be incorporated into a virtual reality based surgical simulator that Agrawal and Ladak are developing for ear surgery training. The work is funded through an NSERC Discovery Grant.

CFI funding for Sabarinathan

March 2006: The University of Western Ontario recently attracted a total of $1,656,566 for Canada Foundation for Innovations (CFI) funding grants. On March 27, 2006 CFI announced a total of seven projects at Western will receive funding under the CFI's new Leaders Opportunity Fund (LOF), including funding for the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department's Dr. Jayshri Sabarinathan.

New Concurrent Degree

March 2006: The Faculty of Engineering and the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry are teaming up again. Effective September 1, Western will offer a new concurrent degree program leading to a BESc in Electrical Engineering and an MD from the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry. Two other similar programs already exist in Mechanical & Materials Engineering and Chemical & Biochemical Engineering.

Four ECE Professors make USC Teaching Honour Roll

November 2005: Four professors from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering have been included in the USC Teaching Honour Roll. This recognition is given to professors that receive an accumulated average of 6.3 or higher (out of 7) on the first 14 questions of the student teaching evaluations of all their courses. This year, the following ECE faculty members have been included in the list: Dr. Hanif Ladak, Dr. Ken McIsaac, Dr. Vijay Parsa, Dr. Rajiv Varma. Dr. McIsaac won two separate awards - one in Electrical & Computer Engineering, and the other for Engineering Science courses. Dr. Ladak also won two separate awards - one in Electrical & Computer Engineering, and one in Medical Biophysics. Dr. Varma has won this award for the fourth time since joining Western in 2001.

Award-Winning Paper

August 2005: Ms. Xiaoqing Liu a Ph.D. student supervised by J. Samarabandu received an award for best student paper for her paper titled "An Edge-based Text Region Extraction Algorithm for Indoor Mobile Robot Navigation" in IEEE International Conference on Mechatronics and Automation (ICMA 2005)

Electrostatics Conference/Helmut Kramer Award Winner

Dr. I. I. Inculet, Dr. G. S. P. Castle, and Dr. K. Adamiak of the Applied Electrostatic Research Centre (AERC) attended the European Federation of Chemical Engineering 10th International Conference on Electrostatics in Helsinki/Espoo Finland from June 14-17, 2005. They presented several papers and Dr. Inculet received the Helmut Kramer Award of the European Federation of Chemical Engineering.

Award-Winning Paper

Title: "A Hybrid Granting Algorithm for QoS Support in Ethernet Passive Optical Networks"
Authors: Xiaofeng Bai, Abdallah Shami, University of Western Ontario, Nasir Ghani, Tennessee Tech. University, Chadi Assi, Concordia University The paper was selected as one of the best five papers at the Optical Networking track at the IEEE International Conference On Communications, IEEE ICC 2005 (http://www.icc05.org/). The conference was held in Seoul, May 16-20 2005. At the optical networking track, there were 159 submissions and only 55 papers were accepted for presentation.
Xiaofeng Bai completed his M.E.Sc. from UWO (ECE Department) in April 2005 and is currently a Ph.D. candidate.
Dr. Abdallah Shami is an Assistant Professor at UWO (ECE Department.)

Graduate Student Teaching Assistant Award

May 2005: Mr. Faheem Ahmed, a Ph.D. student supervised by L. Capretz, received a Graduate Student Teaching Assistant Award from the UWO Society of Graduate Students, the Graduate Teaching Assistants Union and the Faculty of Graduate Studies. Only 16 TAs received this award out of 495 nominations.

NRC Energy Ambassadors Winner

Matt Thompson, a fourth-year Western Electrical Engineering student, has been selected as the winner of the NRC Energy Ambassadors competition for his paper titled Energy Conservation Competition Dual Source Heating.

LHRI Award

Mahdi Tavakoli, a doctoral student supervised by Dr. R. Patel and Dr. M. Moallem received the Sister Mary Doyle Leadership Award at the Lawson Health Research Institute Research Days Awards Banquet held on March 8, 2005. The award honours a trainee of LHRI who has shown exemplary leadership skills as well as passion for his/her research work and the LHRI, providing guidance and mentorship to others at LHRI, and volunteering to benefit LHRI.

Teaching Award

Dr. Rajiv Varma has been awarded the USC Teaching Honour Roll Award of Excellence 2003 – 2004, the third year in a row he has won since coming to Western.

Canada Research Chairs

Dr. Rajni Patel, whose innovative research may lead to less invasive and more cost-effective surgery techniques, is one of six Western faculty named to a Canada Research Chair (CRC) by Prime Minister Paul Martin.

Object Tracking & Image-Based Control System for the Impaired

Dr. Jagath Samarabandu and Dr. Ken McIsaac were recently featured in the Precarn Post for their research on object tracking and image-based control systems for the visually impaired.

CFI Funds Four Projects

With $154,079 in new funding from CFI, Dr. Vijay Parsa will establish a Laboratory for Advanced Digital Signal Processing Research at Western.

Undergraduate Awards

  • Dec.03 - IEEE Canadian Foundation Board of Directors awarded the ECE IEEE Student Chapter a $2550 grant in support of the McNaughton Learning Resource Centre located in SEB
  • Apr./04 - SE U/G student David Carter was awarded the Central Canada Council Hackbusch Award in the 2003 IEEE Canada Student Paper Competition for his 4th year SE project entitled  3D User Interface for a File Management System . The paper has also been published in the IEEE Canadian Review.

Graduate Awards

  • Jan./04 - Jeff Weaver (supervisor R.K. Rao) was awarded a patent in conjunction with some collaborators at CableLabs in Denver. It is a patent on adapting cable modem technology & DOCSIS to support telephony.
  • Jan./04 - Vanja Subotic (supervisor S. Primak) received a prestigious Industry Canada Fessenden Postgraduate Scholarship award.
