Computer-Assisted Medical Intervention (CAMI) program launched Nov. 2009: This program is funded by an NSERC Collaborative Research and Training Experience (CREATE) grant awarded for a six-year period starting from 2009. The CAMI program focuses on transdisciplinary "hands-on" clinically-motivated research. Western Engineering to make the electrical grid greener and smarter Nov. 2009: The GE Digital Energy Innovation Lab in Western's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering officially opened its doors November 18, 2009. The lab will be used to improve the resiliency and responsiveness of the electrical grid and enable greater connectivity and increased security for utilities and consumers. Rajni Patel selected as a fellow in the Royal Society of Canada Sept. 2009: The RSC, now known as RSC: Academies of Arts, Humanities and Sciences of Canada, is the country's oldest and most prestigious organization of scientists and scholars. The RSC is dedicated to encouraging education and the advancement of knowledge in the natural and social sciences and the humanities. Robot keeps surgery on track Sept. 2009: A team of researchers at CSTAR, including Dr. Rajni Patel (ECE, Engineering Leader), Dr. Richard Malthaner (Surgery, Clinical Leader), Dr. Michael Naish (MME), Ms. Ana Luisa Trejos (Doctoral Student, ECE), Dr. Jayender Jagadeesan (Postdoctoral Fellow, ECE), and Ms. Melissa Perri (MESc student, ECE), have developed a minimally-invasive tumour localization instrument. Department of ECE conducts its Annual Graduate Symposium on June 8-9 June 2009: Students will present their findings in a number of sessions dedicated to Robotics and Control, Power Systems Engineering, Software Engineering, Communications Systems and Data Networking, Microsystems and DSP, Applied Electrostatics and Electromagnetics, and Biomedical Systems. NSERC CREATE Grant Awarded to a Western Team led by Dr. Rajni Patel June 2009: A team of 11 researchers from the Faculty of Engineering and the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry at Western, led by Dr. Rajni Patel of the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering, has been awarded $1.65 million over six years by NSERC under its Collaborative Research and Training Experience Program (CREATE). Dr. Ilia Polushin Awarded the Carleton University Senate Medal for Outstanding Academic Achievement June 2009: Dr. Ilia Polushin, Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering has been awarded the Carleton University Senate Medal for Outstanding Academic Achievement on the basis of his overall standing while a Ph.D. student. Dr. Polushin will receive his medal at the Carleton Spring 2009 Convocation ceremony on June 11, 2009. Dr. Hanif Ladak Awarded Western Innovation Fund Grant May 2009: Dr. Hanif Ladak, Associate Professor in the Department of Medical Biophysics and Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering along with co-applicants Dr. Murad Husein and Dr. Sumit Agrawal who are both surgeons in the Department of Otolaryngology within the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry are the recipients of a Western Innovation Fund grant titled "Interactive simulation software for training in otoscopy" in the amount of $23,730. Dr. Mehrdad Kermani Awarded UWO ADF Major Grant May 2009: Dr. Mehrdad Kermani, Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering was awarded a UWO Academic Development Fund Major Grant entitled "A Magneto-Rheological Based Actuation System for Human-Safe Robots" in the amount of $20,214. Dr. Jin Jiang Wins Engineering Prize for Achievement in Research March 2009: Dr. Jin Jiang, Professor in the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering has been selected as a recipient of the Engineering Prize for Achievement in Research. The award is presented annually to recognize the outstanding research contributions of a faculty member in Western Engineering. Dr. Jiang is a prolific researcher whose contributions in electronic instrumentation and control systems have made a significant impact throughout Canada and the World. Dr. Luiz Capretz Co-Authors Book March 2009: Dr. Luiz Capretz, Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, has co-authored a book titled Software Product Lines: A Process Assessment Methodology. Dr. Rajni Patel Receives IEEE Canada Outstanding Engineer Award January 2009: Dr. Rajni Patel, Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, has received the prestigious 2009 IEEE Canada Outstanding Engineer Award. Recipients of this medal are outstanding Canadian engineers recognized for their important contributions to Electrical and Electronics Engineering. The Award was established in 1994. |
