UWO Engineering Starts FIRST Robotics Mentorship Club November 2011: After their strong support for the two fledgling FIRST teams in London, ON last year, Western Engineering has furthered their commitment by starting a FIRST Robotics Mentorship Club where FIRST alumni attending Western as well as other FIRST enthusiasts can lend a hand in the upcoming season. Dr. Robert Sobot awarded CFI grant Sept 2011: Patel backed by CHRP program June 2011: Dr. Rajnikant Patel, professor in the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering, has been named among Canadian researchers backed by a Collaborative Health Research Projects (CHRP) program funding the development of new treatments for lung, breast and ovarian cancers, as well as other life-threatening diseases. Ehsan Salamati wins 1st Place in the CMBEC34 Student Paper Competition June 2011: Ehsan Salamati, an M.E.Sc. student working under Dr. Hanif Ladak, Dr. Abbas Samani, and Dr. Sumit Agrawal (Otolaryngology) won 1st Prize in the Student Paper Competition at the 34th annual Canadian Medical and Biological Engineering Conference. This is Canada's premiere biomedical engineering conference. Ehsan is developing, validating and applying methods to estimate the mechanical properties of the eardrum. This is important for our work on designing virtual environments for training ear surgeons, for developing computer models for surgical outcome prediction and in designing grafts to repair holes in the eardrum. His winning paper is titled "Estimation of the orthortropic elastic properties of the rat eardrum". WIF Targets Three Projects Apr. 2011: Three Western projects are one step closer to moving their work toward commercialization with awards from the Western Innovation Fund (WIF). Xianbin Wang, Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering, is one of the award winners. Western's Software Engineering Program celebrates 10 years Mar. 2011: The Faculty of Engineering at The University of Western Ontario was among the first three schools in Canada to officially launch an undergraduate Software Engineering program in 1999. The first group of students from our program, within the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering, graduated in 2001 – the same year the program was accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board. Jin Jiang elected a Fellow of the EIC Feb. 2011: Jin Jiang, professor of Electrical & Computer Engineering at Western and NSERC/UNENE Senior Industrial Research Chair is among 20 engineers who will be inducted as Fellows of the EIC, for their exceptional contributions to engineering in Canada. Two Electrical and Computer Engineering faculty members inducted into the Canadian Academy of Engineering Jun. 2010: Department Chair of Electrical & Computer Engineering and Hydro One Chair in Power Systems Engineering, Tarlochan Sidhu, and Electrical Engineering Professor and NSERC/UNENE Senior Industrial Research Chair, Jin Jiang, were inducted as Fellows into the Canadian Academy of Engineering on June 3, 2010 in conjunction with the Academy's 2010 Annual General Meeting. Equipment donation enhances wireless research at Western May 2010: Rohde & Schwarz Canada recently donated equipment valued at approximately $61,000 to Western Engineering's Laboratory of Emerging Communication Systems. This donation will support Electrical Engineering Professor Xianbin Wang's research on cognitive and adaptive communication techniques for healthcare and multimedia applications. Mehrdad Kermani receives CFI grant Apr. 2010: The Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) has provided grants, totalling $1,066,058, through its Leaders Opportunity Fund. One of the four principal investigators receiving funding was Electrical & Computer Engineering Professor Mehrdad Kermani who will develop a new generation of robotic arms that allow for safe interactions with humans, transforming not only the hand, but the face of industrial automation. Kermani received $300,723 to create a robotics platform that pays specific attention to safety and opens avenues for applications as human-assistive devices. Julie Ladiges wins CEMF AMEC Masters scholarship award Mar. 2010: Julie Ladiges an ECE M.E.Sc. student working under the supervision of Dr. Vijay Parsa has won the Canadian Engineering Memorial Foundation AMEC Masters scholarship award. The award includes a trip to Vancouver to accept the award and attend the Engineers Canada AGM, mentorship and networking opportunities with CEMF and Engineers Canada, and an optional internship with AMEC when she is done her Masters. There is only one scholarship awarded for the whole of Canada and any branch in Engineering. ENT SimTech wins 2010 Venture London Business Competition Mar. 2010: ENT Simulation Technologies Inc. (ENT SimTech), a Western spin-off company, won the 2010 Venture London Business Competition in the "Proposed Business Category". The company was founded by Dr. Hanif Ladak, Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Dr. Sumit Agrawal with support from Jaipreet Bindra and Paul Paolatto from WORLDiscoveries. Meranda Salem wins Dean's Award of Research Excellence at Western Research Forum Mar. 2010: Meranda Salem a graduate student in the ECE Department working under the supervision of Dr. Lyndon Brown won first prize in the Physical Science Area at the Western Research Forum held on February 27th. The poster she submitted was for her research on Control and Power Supply for Resistance Spot Welding (RSW).
She will receive a certificate and cash prize on March 12th. Hydro One supports power grid research Jan. 2010: A new partnership between Hydro One and The University of Western Ontario will increase the reliability and security of the electrical grid while also promoting opportunities for greener sources of energy. Peter Castle recognized for exceptional contributions to engineering in Canada Jan. 2010: The Engineering Institute of Canada has announced the 2010 recipients of its honours, awards and fellowships. Two of Western Engineering's top researchers are on the list: G.S. Peter Castle of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and J.M. Floryan of the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering. |
