Transferring to Different Graduate Program

Transfer from M.Eng. Program to M.E.Sc. Program

From time to time a student in the M.Eng. program will demonstrate excellent research potential and both the student and Faculty Advisor will agree that, rather than complete the M.Eng., the student should transfer into an M.E.Sc. program. Requests for such transfer must be submitted on an “Application to Transfer” form to the CEE Graduate Office and must be made before the end of the first year of the student’s registration. Such requests will not be considered unless a professor with Masters-level supervisory status in the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies includes with the form a letter offering to supervise and financially support the student for the remainder of his/her M.E.Sc. studies.

All courses accepted for credit for the M.Eng. program at the University of Western Ontario will normally be credited towards the course requirements for the M.E.Sc. program.

Transfer from M.E.Sc. to Ph.D. Program

From time to time a student in the M.E.Sc. program will demonstrate excellent potential for doctoral studies and both the student and Chief Advisor will agree that, rather than complete the M.E.Sc., the student should expand the research into a doctoral thesis. Requests for such transfer must be submitted on an “Application to Transfer” form to the CEE Graduate Office and will normally be made within the third term of the student’s registration.

All courses accepted for credit for the M.E.Sc. program at the University of Western Ontario will normally be credited towards the course requirements for the Ph.D. program.

If the transfer is approved by the CEE Graduate Committee and the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, the student must subsequently pass the Ph.D. Comprehensive Examination before submitting a Change of Status form effective the next term. From that time hence the student shall be subject to all regulations and procedures applicable to Ph.D. students.

Transfer from Ph.D. to M.E.Sc. Program

The School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies strongly discourages permitting students who have been admitted to a Ph.D. program to transfer to an M.E.Sc. program. To initiate this procedure, the student must voluntarily withdraw from the Ph.D. program by completing a form available from the CEE Graduate Office. The student must then apply for registration in the M.E.Sc. program. There is no guarantee that the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies will permit the student to register in the M.E.Sc. program under these circumstances. An unfavourable admission decision can not be appealed following the procedures described in UWO Senate Regulations.
