MEng Degree Requirements
During the First Term of Registration
Students in the M.Eng. program are not provided with financial support
of any kind by the Faculty Advisor, Department of Civil & Environmental
Engineering, Faculty of Engineering or School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.
During the First Term of Registration
During first term of registration, and after consultation with the
Faculty Advisor, the student must submit a Proposed Program of Study,
available from the CEE Graduate Office, to the CEE Graduate Office for
review and approval by the CEE Graduate Committee. The Proposed Program
of Study must indicate the proposed course selection and, if applicable,
engineering project topic. Failure to submit a proposed program at the
end of the first term of registration will entail the denial of
permission to register in further courses.
Course Selection
The M.Eng. program is a coursework-based degree that requires a minimum
ten half courses (or five full courses), or a minimum of eight half
courses (four full courses) plus an Engineering Project.
In consultation with the Faculty Advisor, each student shall select a
tentative set of courses required for the M.Eng. program. These courses
may include 400 or higher level courses offered by other Departments in
the Faculty of Engineering, or 300 or higher level courses offered by
other Faculties. A majority of the courses taken for credit should be
offered by the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering.
The student may also take undergraduate courses, NOT for degree
credit, required to make up deficiencies in the student's preparation
for graduate work in Civil & Environmental Engineering. All such
undergraduate courses must be taken during the first year of
registration.
Should the student wish to take undergraduate courses that are not
required as preparation for graduate work the student must submit
payment for these courses along with a completed Undergraduate Course
Form to the CEE Graduate Office. More information regarding the fee
amount can be obtained from the
Office of the Registrar.
During Subsequent Terms of Registration
School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies regulations require that the student must
“maintain a cumulative average of at least 70% calculated each term over
all courses taken for credit, with no grade less than 60%” (Graduate
Calendar, Section 3).
Progress Review
Annual progress reviews are not required for students in the M.Eng.
program.
Continuous Registration
Students enrolled in the M.Eng. program MUST register in every
term from initial registration until degree requirements are completed.
If unable to register, the student may apply for a Leave of Absence.
Part-time Studies
A student who is registered full-time in the M.Eng. program may apply
for
part-time status.
Residency Requirement
The minimum residency requirement for the M.Eng. is three terms of
full-time registration. In determining the residency requirement, two
terms of part-time registration are regarded as fulfilling one term of
full time registration.
Request for Extension
All M.Eng. programs must be completed within a period not exceeding
three calendar years from initial registration. To extend this period,
the student must apply for a
Request for Extension.
Engineering Project
Should the student choose to do an Engineering Project in partial
fulfillment of the requirements of the M.Eng. degree, the topic for the
project will be selected in consultation with a faculty member who is
normally the Faculty Advisor for the student. A detailed engineering
report is required and each candidate will present this material in a
public lecture but is not required do defend it at an oral examination.
Problems may be assigned in consultation with the candidate’s employer.
The project report shall be prepared in accordance with criteria
presented in the Faculty of Engineering Science “Guide for Preparation
of ES 500 Final Reports”. A copy of this Guide is available in the
Graduate Office. The student must present the information in the report
in a public lecture, arranged by the Graduate Affairs Assistant in
consultation with the Faculty Advisor. The student shall submit two
copies of the project report for grading: one will be graded by the
Faculty Advisor and the other by a faculty member assigned by the Chair
of the CEE Graduate Committee after consultation with the Faculty
Advisor. The Chair of the CEE Graduate Committee will be responsible for
reconciling any significant differences between the results submitted by
the two graders.
Clearance Form
All M.Eng. students must complete a “Graduate Student Clearance Form”,
available from the CEE Graduate Office, before departing from the
Faculty of Engineering. This form must be submitted to the Graduate
Affairs Assistant before a “Change of Status” form will be forwarded to
the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies to permit the student to graduate.
