Green Process Engineering - Research
Most of the instructors for Western’s Green Process Engineering program are accomplished researchers who are working with industrial and
government partners to develop Green Process Engineering solutions:
A CFI grant “Green Energy and Environmentally Friendly Technologies was used to set up the
Claudette MacKay-Lassonde Pavilion which includes well-equipped research laboratories as well as facilities dedicated
to undergraduate student projects.
An MRI grant was used to set up the Institute for Chemicals and Fuels from Alternative Resources ICFAR,
whose goal is to quickly move research from lab benches to large pilot plant/demonstration projects, paving the way for Ontario
bio-fuel and chemical innovations to reach the global marketplace.
ICFAR hosts a new NSERC/FPInnovations Industrial Research Chair in Forest Biorefinery.
ICFAR led the Agricultural Bioproducts Innovation Network (ABIN),
a major national research network launched to develop integrated biorefining processes for effectively and economically
converting renewable biomass into energy, fuels and chemicals.
ICFAR leads the Thermochemical node of the Lignoworks network,
whose objective is to create technology platforms for novel materials and chemicals based on lignin to replace fossil-fuel
based chemicals and products.
The Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering has applied for two new Industrial Research Chairs,
in partnership with a major oil company and with a company specialized in water purification.
Students in the Undergraduate Green Process Engineering Program will have the opportunity of use
ICFAR's facilities for their
Green Process Engineering Laboratory Course. Selected students will also have the opportunity to work in Western's research
facilities such as ICFAR's for summer internships and for the Green Process Engineering Project course.
