Discovery Western
Frequently Asked Questions
General:
What is Discovery Western?
Presently in its 22nd year of operation, Discovery Western
(DW)
is an award winning non-profit organization that aims to promote awareness
of science, engineering and technology among young people, through an
innovative and interactive learning program.
DW
operates out of the Faculty of Engineering at
Western University and is lead by a team of undergraduate engineering
students. During the months of May and June, DW offers fun and exciting
workshops in elementary school classrooms in southwestern Ontario. These
workshops explore the exciting world of science and engineering, while
complimenting the Ontario Science and Technology Curriculum. In July and
August DW offers a summer day camp for children entering Grades 2 through 8.
Each one week camp session is filled to the brim with experiments, design
projects, eye opening tours and outdoor activities that satisfy even the
keenest mind. All activities present engineering, science and
technology, in a thought provoking, exhilarating manner. Camp sessions are
offered in London, Sarnia and Port Elgin.
Who works for Discovery Western?
Discovery Western is a Western Engineering External Services outreach program and is staffed by students. The Directors and Senior Instructors are all undergraduate engineering students at Western. All other staff members are high school students with an interest in science, engineering, and technology.
Camp:
When and where is camp being held in 2012?
Please see our Camp Schedule.
How much is a week of camp?
A one week camp session
costs $200, Monday to Friday from 9:00am to 4:00 pm. This
year, due to holiday Monday, our first week of camp will cost
only $160. Extended care is provided
for an additional $15 and extends the supervisory hours to 8:30 to 4:30.
Discovery Western offers a Family Discount! For each
additional child the camp fee is reduced by $5 each child. Please
record on the Registration Form the children included in the discount.
What age group should I register for?
DW campers are grouped based on the grade that they will be entering in the fall succeeding that summer. For example: If a camper is in Grade 3 at the time of registration, then they will enter Grade 4 in the fall and therefore should register for the Grade 4/5/6 group.
Is lunch provided?
Unfortunately, we are not able to offer a lunch program. We do however offer a Pizza Day once per week where lunch can be purchased. Parents are asked to send a lunch with their camper(s) the other 4 days. Out of respect for those with Nut allergies, as with most camps, we ask that no peanut products be brought to camp.
Is there swimming?
We do not have access to the pools on campus, however we will have our awesome H2Olympics each week. The campers will participate in a plethora of water based events that feature engineering principles. Past events have included: Tower of Terror, Army of Darkness, PSW, Soapy Hill Relay, and the afternoon is always capped with an astounding Liquid Nitrogen demonstration.
Does the curriculum repeat?
New this year we will be offering 2 different curriculums for the same age group! Therefore your son or daughter can attend two weeks in a row and the material will not be repeated.
Do you offer bursaries?
Discovery Western has very limited number of bursaries available this year. If you would like more information please contact the Director of Discovery Western by phone at 519-661-2111 ext. 88826 or email discover@uwo.ca.
