Senior Instructor

Job Description:

Are you looking for an exciting summer job? Do you enjoy working with kids? Discovery Western is looking for fun and enthusiastic individuals to be Senior Instructors.

Senior Instructors visit elementary schools in Southwestern Ontario during the months of May and June to facilitate Engineering and Science workshops. During July and August, Instructors will plan and run summer day camp sessions at The University of Western Ontario. Preference will be given to current undergraduate engineering students enrolled at The University of Western Ontario.

Interested applicants must:

  • Be a creative, self-directed, responsible individual who demonstrate leadership and strong team player skills
  • Be able to multi-task and demonstrate good organizational and time management skills
  • Have experience working with children

Full Job Description:

Education: Currently enrolled in a Bachelor of Engineering Science program at The University of Western Ontario

Experience:

·         working in a camp setting and/or with youths

·         being a team leader

Skills:

·         Passion for working with kids

·         Well organized

·         Strong leader

·         Strong communication skills with youths, University students, parents, sponsors and suppliers

·         Takes directions well

·         Must have excellent time management skills

·         Familiar with website design (HTML)

·         Police Record Check- including Vulnerable Position Screening is required

·         Drivers Licence and access to a vehicle is an asset

The Assistant Director works in a team environment with the Director and reports to the Outreach Programs Coordinator, Faculty of Engineering. The Assistant Director assists the Director with the planning and operation of the Discovery Western Program including – hiring and working with Instructors, obtaining sponsorship, developing curriculum, organizing and participating in Girls Club and GREAT, running elementary school workshops, overseeing operation of camp program etc.  

Hours of Work:

·         Part Time January to May and September to December

·         Full time from May to September

Start Date: January 1st, 2012
End Date: December 31st 2012

Rate of Pay: $14 to $15 per hour

 

Junior Instructor

We are not accepting applications for this position at this time.

Junior Instructors assist the Senior Instructors in facilitating camp sessions during July and August. Typically, Junior Instructors are Senior high school students entering the Faculty of Engineering at UWO in the fall. JI's will have an opportunity to be at the helm (plan, design, facilitate, and supervise) a large group project. The JI position pays $10.25/hour, 35-40 hours a week.

Junior instructors should be entering grade 12 or first year university for the following school year, with an interest in Engineering and Science.

Volunteering Opportunities

Get your 40 hours this summer by volunteering for one week of camp!

Volunteers are typically high school students  interested in pursuing science, engineering and technology. Volunteers assist all the Instructors during the camp sessions in July and August. All volunteers will receive volunteer credit. Some of the volunteer tasks will include supervising projects and activities. To become a volunteer we require you to complete a successful interview followed by a training session and a successful police record check. We also require all volunteers to be aged 16-18 with parental permission.
